Plot: Produced by Nick SImunek, Matthew Binns and Michael Mailer, directed by Ben Ramsey, and Starring Michael Jai White, BLOOD & BONE is the story of a mysterious drifter named Isaiah Bone who falls into a mob controlled street fighting ring in the back alleys of Los Angeles. A post-modern Samurai movie, it blends the dangerous world of gangster controlled underground Mixed Martial Arts fighting, with a visually stunning, action packed plot that will transport audiences into the world before “Ultimate” fighting became mainstream.

What I liked about this movie is that it's comfortable with what it is. It's essentially an old-school underground street-fighting/martial arts flick. The plot is good but somewhat formulaic and the fight sequences are good but not revolutionary. But, there's no pretense or aspiration to be any more and that's what makes the movie work


For MMA fans out there, the movie serves as further illustration of how far the sport is reaching into mainstream consciousness with cameos by three MMA fighters. Bob Sapp has by far the biggest role of any of the MMA stars as a previously unbeatable streetfighter, but Kimbo Slice plays a convincing prison thug, and Gina Carano has an all-too-brief role as a female streetfighter. I can see all three having nice futures in acting. Sapp, especially, seems very comfortable in front of the camera and carries his behemoth frame well.
